The game of chess is played between two opponents on opposite sides of a board with 64 alternate-colored squares. 1 king, 1 queen, 2 rooks, 2 bishops, 2 knights, and 8 pawns make up each player's 16-piece set. To checkmate the opposing king is the object of the game.
